CHARACTER NAME: Shiki Tohno
SERIES: Tsukihime + Shiki (1)
CANON POINT: Post Melty Blood Actress Again
APPEARANCE: Your Friendly Neighborhood High School Student

PERSONALITY: Where can one begin when it comes to the person known as Shiki Tohno? He's killed the unkillable, charmed the uncharmable and THIS CHAIR THIS CHAIR THIS CHAIR. He has gone through so much that a normal person wouldn't last a second. But first and foremost, Shiki is your average ordinary high school student. However, he's somehow different from others. Even though he carries an "air of death" around him which can make people stray away from him, he's still somehow fairly popular with the classmates. While Shiki does seem like a loner, he's actually very friendly and polite around people. One other reason why people might stray away from Shiki is because he hangs around a delinquent like Arihiko Inui - Who is obviously not the model student. In fact, it's very hard to believe that Shiki is actually best friends with the guy. From the verbal jabs and cutting comments that they throw at each other, they might seem like enemies or rivals. They even have fights on the side of the river with each other sometimes. But in reality, they are actually very close to each other. In a way, you could say that the closer a person becomes with Shiki, the more casual and mean he gets with you. He's not the type to hold anything back when it comes to making a rude comment about a person. Shiki is the type to tease and joke around the people he likes without restraint. And it's explained that because of the fact that Arihiko has also had a near-death experience in his life, he also knows how fragile life is and can get along with Shiki on that level. Also Satsuki Yumizuka of his classroom was attracted to Shiki because of his unusual air and his caring heart. To make a long story short, Shiki is a freak magnet. Weird people somehow flock to him even if he doesn't like it.

Now while Shiki might seem like a normal person, he definitely has some abnormal factors about him. One important part in the story is how he struggles to keep his interactions with the supernatural world and his ordinary world apart from each other, but somehow they end up crossing together in one way or another. This goes into how his Mystic Eyes of Death Perception go into play. Because of the fact that Shiki can see the death of all things more easily is one of the reasons why he cherishes life more than anyone else. Normal students don't treat school as special as Shiki does. In Arcueid's route, he tells her how people should cherish the most little and pointless things in life everyday because all things must come to end. Objects, relationships, people-- Everything. And Shiki of all people knows this better than anyone... Especially with how close he walks with death himself. Now as laid back and lazy as he can be, he can also be a very hard worker. This applies in with how he's usually in the top of the class when it comes to his studies and he aims to go to a university. And also how hard he works whenever he decides to dedicate himself to helping someone. Which goes into another side of his personality, Shiki is very selfless and caring. Even in Ciel's route when Arcueid had forced him into helping her, he still ended up wanting to stay by her side in the end and didn't want her to be alone. Even when Ciel had continued to tell Shiki that Arcueid was a vampire who would suck his blood one day, Shiki still believed that there was good in her and didn't view her as an evil and cruel vampire. Sometimes, he will complain and be reluctant depending on the circumstances, but he never ignores a cry for help. It's not that he views himself as a hero or wants to become one, but it's just in his nature to be kind-hearted to people. This is one reason why and how he ends up winning the affections of many girls.

Moving on, Shiki is also a bad liar towards others and he honestly hates doing it when the situation is serious. The guy even tries his best to lie to himself on occasions and convince himself that everything is alright when it really isn't. Even Sion had said that Shiki has an honest face (on their very first meeting) and it's easy to tell whenever he's hiding something from people. While it's a benefit on how much Shiki wants to protect the people in his life from harm, it's also a downfall because he ends up making them worry. He's the kind of person to always stick his neck in whenever it doesn't belong or gets wrapped up in something dangerous. And also his honesty is a double-edged sword. While Shiki can say the right thing, it can also get him into deep trouble and insult others without him realizing it. This is why cool and collected characters like Akiha and Sion get angry with him a lot. Not to mention, it's easy to manipulate Shiki with his considerate personality. Now while Shiki is a peace loving person, he's also got a dark side about him. This rolls back to his heritage as a Nanaya assassin. Throughout the events of Tsukihime, Shiki stuggles with suppressing his killing instincts and has a fear that he might end up becoming a genuine killer. As you play as Shiki in the game, some of your choices with him will all depend on if you can keep his morality views in the 'good' area. If you have him slip up and kill someone close to him, then he'll become a cold-hearted killer. After the game, he has learned to suppress his urges whenever they come up, but they're still there. Now whenever Shiki is in a very stressful situation or when someone has crossed the line far enough, he'll become more serious and "tuned" to the situation like a machine. Basically, he'll let his killing impulses take over and ignore everything to focus on destroying his enemy. Many have mistaken it as "another personality" whenever it happens, but it is actually Shiki who is doing all of the work and subconsciously relying on the assassin skills that he learned from a very young age. Other than that, when Shiki gets serious, he becomes more colder and filled with a desire to kill. Now while Shiki can be mature, he can also show some childish sides such as him teasing people or blowing up and yelling at people (regardless of who they are) whenever they're acting foolish or when a situation defies common sense.

Now the biggest lessons of life that Shiki has taken to heart was whenever he was younger with Aoko Aozaki. The most important things he has learned is that "great power comes with great responsibility" such as taking care of his eyes and being responsibility for his mistakes. While he's quick to accept his mistakes, he usually puts more burden on himself than he should and ends up going into long periods of self-loathing for them. One major example is how he ends up killing Satsuki in another route to save her from staying as a vampire. And the guilt from killing her practically stays with him throughout the whole route. While people can forgive Shiki for mistakes he makes, there are times when Shiki can't fully forgive himself and continue to shoulder the regrets from what he has done. And also, whenever there is a horrible situation he encounters, Shiki usually cools himself down and thinks about the situation he's in before coming to a logical conclusion. While this has managed to save his life more than once, Shiki can still lose his cool and be afraid of certain situations or get angry. Some other quirks about his personality is how Shiki can be really dense even if he is smart. Whenever it comes to supernatural lectures, he can get the basics of basics and be sharp at times, but he'll usually end up missing the important obvious points when they're there. Sometimes, Shiki ends up learning about things that he's better off not knowing because of his honest and curious nature. And also whenever it comes to understanding a girl having romantic feelings for him, Shiki can be horribly oblivious. Another thing is that Shiki can be an escapist at times. Usually, he's much better at running away from battles that he knows he cannot win than facing them head-on. Or whenever there's a really bad or awkward situation that he's in? He finds a way to retreat from it or completely deny it altogether. Such as whenever he first killed Arcuied, he kept telling himself that it was all a dream before she met up with him on the very next day. Whenever that happened, he completely freaked out. Overall, Shiki is not a saint or a devil. He's just your average and honest guy who wants to live in the here and now with the people he loves.

ABILITIES:
The Mystic Eyes of Death Perception - To make a long story short, this is Shiki's eliminate trump card and gamebreaker ability. The eyes allow Shiki to see the "death" of objects and people through lines and dots in the environment and he happens to be the only one who can touch them. And he can even kill concepts if his eyes become strong enough. Whenever Shiki traces or cuts the line of something, the fated death of that object or person comes quickly and breaks down without any possible ways of repair. And when Shiki pierces a dot, the complete destruction of the target's existence becomes inevitable. The eyes bypasses all magical barriers and defenses and can even defeat concepts like reincarnation. You could say that Shiki is a walking "1-Hit Kill". Now while his eyes sound incredible, there are plenty of negatives to go along with them. Shiki's brain can suffer under incredible strain whenever he's trying to understand and adjust his eyes to something that he's attempting to see the death of. If worst came to worst, Shiki's brain would explode and he would become a vegetable or he can even completely lose his sight because of his eyes. But because Shiki has these eyes, he's destined to die a lot more quickly than anyone else because the eyes will continue to grow stronger and stronger. On another note, there are some things that Shiki can't kill because they have no fated death in certain circumstances. And also, Shiki still has to get in range and up-close to a target if he wants to kill it. He doesn't get a power boost from having these eyes. Shiki had originally had 'Pure Eyes' (Jougan) thanks to his family's bloodline, but his eyes had mutated into these after getting into a near-death experience.

Pure Eyes (Jougan) - Shiki's original eyes before he mutated into the Eyes of Death Perception. Basically, Shiki's eyes are able to 'see things that aren't able to be seen'. It's a unique form of a psychic ability where Shiki can see things that others cannot. For example, whenever he was fighting Akiha, Shiki was able to see Akiha's power in strands of red hair. Meanwhile, Akiha herself is not fully aware on how her own powers work. Unlike the Eyes of Death, Shiki can turn these on or off at will.

Sixth Sense - Because of Shiki's assassin bloodline, his instincts will sense supernatural threats nearby and warn Shiki through headaches or through some kind of bodily pain. His physical and mental functions will suddenly sharpen on the spot after that. If the threat is horribly inhuman, Shiki's subconscious will become more hostile until it demands him to remove the threat immediately. This is shown in Shiki's narration, whenever there's "another voice" urging Shiki to destroy a target and he's trying to resist it. At this point, Shiki has learned to tune it out because he's always interacting with supernatural beings, but it's still present. He can still defeat his inhuman opponents on his own terms rather than fall to his killing impulses.

Instincts - Throughout numerous times in the story, Shiki will be triggered by killing or harmful intent directed towards himself and he will subconsciously react along with his body to minimize the damage taken or defend himself. In a way, you could say that Shiki can always sense his own death coming and reacts as a survival mechanism. If one could describe this more bluntly, it's exactly like Spiderman's "Spidey Sense". He's even able to dodge or defend against attacks that he didn't know was there. So to make a long short short, Shiki is nearly impossible to kill even when you're attempting to sneak up on him. One major example was when Ciel had attempted to impale his head from behind and he avoids it. Occasionally, Shiki's narration will say that 'his body moves as if it belonged to someone else' during fights which implies that his assassin survival instincts are at work. But even his instincts aren't enough to rely on in an all-out fight. Shiki can still be wounded through openings or if his opponent's abilities turn out to be too strong and 'abnormal'.

Flash Sheath (Sensa) - One of Shiki's special assassin techniques passed down from his training in the Nanaya family. This allows Shiki to attack at subsonic speeds (as in he can move as fast as a bullet). At best, Shiki's arm movements will look like a series of blurs to the nearby observer. One of the classic uses of this skill was when Shiki had slashed up Arcueid into seventeen pieces in the beginning of the game.

Flash Dash (Sensou) - Another one of Shiki's special assassin techniques. This allows him to completely vanish for an instant and reappear. Although in reality, he's simply moving faster than the human eye can track him. He can use this to scale walls and ceilings. But even Shiki isn't a supernatural spider. In Kohaku's route, he ran up the wall briefly, turned his body around and took a single step off of the ceiling to suprise attack Akiha. It's mainly used as an unexpected trump card in Tsukihime, but Shiki is now able to use this technique at will whenever it's necessary and whenever he's in the right state of mind.

POSSESSIONS: 1) Nanatsu-Yoru (Seven Nights) - An inherited switchblade given to by his father. This is Shiki's main weapon. 2) A white ribbon 3) His high school uniform along with other casual clothes 4) Mystic Eye Killer Glasses (in memory of his teacher)

>PERSONA
MAJOR ARCANA: 1.) Death 2.) The Fool 3.) The Hanged Man

SHADOW: This has already been explored in canon, so here we go. Shiki's shadow is basically a more cold-blooded version of himself. A killer with a permanent cold smile on his face and has a large detachment to life. In a way, you could say that his shadow had never experienced the positive points of living and gone through a near-death experience. And let's not mention that he says the most coolest and poetic lines ever delivered. The boss fight will pretty much involve him rely on the full techniques of the Nanaya clan unlike Shiki who doesn't exploit them to their fullest potential to kill others. Shiki has faced and defeated himself numerous times in canon, it won't be necessary for him to do it again.

PERSONA: Grim Reaper – This character is the most common recognized figure in mythology. The Grim Reaper is there to put a human through the concept of death and show that it’s time is near. How this relates to Shiki is how he’s fully aware on how death is always close by and he even happens to be one to show his immortal opponents that death is inescapable, no matter how long you’ve lived through life. Everything has a beginning and an end. The Grim Reaper represents the end of all things. This persona will specialize in Dark, Slash and Endurance moves, but it’s weak against light.

FIRST PERSON ACTION, JOURNAL, OR PHONE SAMPLE:
I don't know what I gotten the urge to hold onto a journal these days, but it feels pretty girly writing in here. Maybe if I ended up mysteriously lost in a blanket of fog, someone can find this and learn about the adventures of Tohno Shiki. Not a bad pitch for a movie, right? Although I'm much more of a comedy movie fan, then horror. I can't really watch those movies without getting queasy from seeing the blood.

Moving on... How can I say this? Whenever the days become foggy, it feels like I'm sitting at the bottom of the ocean. It's like there's a giant shark waiting out there to devour certain people that get lost from their 'pack of fish'. Man... What's with me? Are these even proper metaphors to use? I'm not at my top notch wit today. But still, there's something that fog that makes me really uneasy whenever it appears. It's like there's something dangerous about it. Well, whatever. Maybe this place just has strange weather conditions.

Let's see... What else? Today, I saw a black crow, accidently walked under a ladder and had a black cat cross my path. And to think that this was all on the way to school. I guess I'm screwed if I get three harbringers of bad luck appearing in a single day. But then again, isn't it natural for everyone to have a little bit of bad luck? Speaking of which, there was also an idiot kid who was caught up in a trashcan. I almost thought it was a homeless guy, but it actually someone who went to my new school. I decided to help him out since he looked pretty pathetic in there. Anyway... I'll just handwave those 'bad luck elements' as matters of concidence.

Ah, yeah... That reminds me. I should really consider picking up a job soon. I'm already feeling bad enough that I have to mooch off of the Amagi family's inn, but I think I'm also getting cold stares. I've seen weirder customers walk in, so I wonder if they get the same treatment too. I wouldn't blame them if they kick them up. At least the manager's daughter is pretty cute. I think her name was Yukiko Amagi. I'll have to repay her for her kindness from these past few days. I guess if I consider getting a job selling flowers, I can drop by and give him some? That should do nicely.

Well then. That's all this honorable Tohno Shiki has to say. Until tommorrow.

-- Tohno Shiki

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:

Shiki was really impressed with how much a super store could contain within itself. It was almost like another city. If he had bought Arcueid along with him, she probably would've dragged him around the entire store and asked him a lot of questions on how certain things worked and what was what. While he had to admit that it was much more peaceful without her around, Arcueid had always found ways to make his life much more exciting than it used to be. Putting those nostagic thoughts aside, he decided to commence what was on today's sedcule. A few hours back, he had agreed to go out with some friends after school. Normally, he would've decided to head back to his room and simply relax... But he figured that he could cut loose today.

The first order of business was to meet up at Junes, then go sing up some karaoke and finally go and watch a movie. Shiki cannot remember the last time he had spend time with a group of friends, so he was pretty pumped. He wasn't the kind of guy who wanted a lot of friends... Just a few close ones that he really trusted. Now he had sent out a text to tell them that he had arrived at the meeting spot, but he figured that he could look around before the rest of them showed up. The first spot was for him to wander through the clothes section. Maybe one of these days, he would get some new threads for himself. But he needed to get himself a stable job first.

Shiki didn't stay in the same section for long since he was killing time, after all. The second place he had traveled towards was the furniture section. He had to admit that while it was impressive, the furniture back at his mansion was a lot better. Again, nostalgic feelings had entered his heart as he reflected on how Akiha and the maids were doing. Certainly, his beloved little sister was raising all kinds of hell looking for him. When Shiki had thought about it, it was probably best to stick around here than face Akiha's wrath. But at the same time, his older brother instincts had kicked in and figured that he would have to confront her sooner or later. And as if to drive away those uncomfortable feelings, Shiki had found himself a chair.

No, not this chair.

It was one of those vibrating chairs that he had seen in a magazine once. The bespectacled boy had never been up close with one before, so he figured that he could try it out. It was within a man's nature to be curious of the unknown, so he sat himself down and pressed the button on the remote. The moment he felt the vibrations throughout his body, Shiki ended up a relaxed (yet almost perverted) looking expression on his face. Just why didn't they have these in the mansion? This would've made Shiki's stressful days a lot easier.

After getting some strange stares from the customers, Shiki had hopped out and awkwardly rubbed the back of his head. Did he try smoothing out the situation? No, it was best to run away and avoid the piercing looks from strangers. His venture had finally had him end up at the electronic section. To be honest, Shiki was never really up to date with the current fads that teens his age were into. He just couldn't really grasp an understanding on electronics. A friend of his had to help him out with learning how to use his cellphone and mastering the art of texting. So when he came into this place... It was like he entered another world. A world far more foreign that those of vampires. At the very least, he knew about video games from playing with Kohaku every now and then. He took a few glances at the game systems and software available before eying the flat-screen televisions.

Now this was interesting.

Shiki had took a moment to take a closer at them. With a price like that, he was wondering who in there right mind would afford something like this. And out of curiosity, Shiki had decided to slowly put his hand on the TV screen and before he knew it....

He was falling.

Falling and screaming.

Shiki was falling and screaming. Falling towards an alien world that had gone beyond the limits of common sense. The peace loving boy was going to get along with this world like how oil gotten along with water. For crying out loud, he just wanted to have himself a normal day without getting involved in something out of the ordinary! If there was someone scripting this crazy scenario for himself, he was going to beat them up. Shiki had thought everything in this town was normal, but was he ever wrong.
